Communication Technology Theory

The study of communication technology attempts to dress the implications of interactions. Commonly called communication studies, it attempts to look at the relationship between society and technology and asked questions about the implications it has on political agency, autonomy and determinism.

One prominent theory is that social construction of technology which suggests that technology does not have a hold on human society, rather that we are able to dictate the terms and use technology as we wish.

The actor-network theory proposes that both humans and nonhuman actors, such as communication technology, have equal influence. This theory argues that we should think carefully about how we want technology to replicate human behavior but, importantly as a moral question rather than something to be feared.

One event which has been studied extensively in communication technology is the Arab Spring in 2010. During the uprising, instant messaging services and other forms of technological communication were used to inform and mobilize the protest which occurred in the Middle East. Many have commented how without these developments in technology this would not have been possible and advocated the use of such devices for being a critical factor in influencing progressive social change.

Another positive effect which has been studied is the economic growth which has been enabled by while these technologies are able to increase connectivity while please communication technologies. Businesses can reduce costs and increase connectivity by communicating via online devices.

However, it is not all positive and has actually caused many problems. Both academic and civil investigation has concluded that these technologies can make it easier for human trafficking, drug trafficking and the organization of international terrorism. While most agree but this form of mass communication is largely positive there is a large conversation taking place which aims to decide how we regulate technologies to avoid their negative impacts.

While these technologies can increase connectivity so friends and family can keep in touch around the world they also are believed to have a negative impact on the psyche of modern society. Most experts argue that these technologies should be approached and used with caution to avoid obsessive behaviors and potentially damaging mental health conditions. One thing is for certain, the debates around these ever-changing technologies are set to continue to dominate the spheres of government and academia.
